Why can’t you have fresh pre-packaged produce, and be kind to the environment too?
This is the question that started Pick Me.
After years of working in the fresh produce industry, we noticed the increasing demand for pre-packaged products. And there is good reason for that - pre-packaged products are great! They’re convenient, allow for a more consistent product, and protect the produce inside. But when the packaging is made of plastic… They also kind of suck for the environment. We think you shouldn’t have to choose between the environment, and the product you want.
So, we gathered our brains trust together and started researching eco-friendly packaging options. After much deliberation we decided to adopt a fully cardboard packaging option. This type of packaging is easily recycled…. meaning you don’t need a degree in waste management to make sure it ends up in the right place. There is no need to return the plastic to the store or separate different parts of the packaging into different bins. Essentially if you live in South Australia, this product can be put either in your yellow recycling bin or your green waste bin - two simple options for you!
So tick that box, We found a locally sourced 100% recyclable packaging alternative. But then, as always the next ethical question is never too far away… What about the trees required to make the cardboard; the carbon footprint, the bird life and small animals who live in the trees... how can we address this?
Here is where the Trees for the Life Program came to save the day (and hopefully the planet). Trees for Life is a great locally run not-for-profit organisation that works with volunteers, community organisations, local farmers and corporate organisations to revegetate and protect bushland, farmland and urban terrain. At Pick Me we have committed to donate a portion of profits from the sale of Pick Me products to Trees for Life to ensure the planting of trees. This will not only help complete the carbon lifecycle but also help re-build the farming areas that the fruit in the Pick Me products are sourced from…. Winning!
Our hope is that we will see everyone come together to ensure our goal of providing you with a pre-packaged product that is kind to the environment is reached.
